Fred was born and raised on a rural farm in southern Wisconsin. The picture on the right is his father’s family in 1918, and yes . . . that really is a log cabin. The little boy in the picture is Fred’s father. On the
farm where Fred was raised, they didn’t even have indoor plumbing until he was 11, so he understands first-hand the challenges of living a rural life. They lived on what they grew on their land, plus the deer that they could hunt in the fall.
Finally, he “got smart”, as he puts it. Tiring of the freeways and the high-pressure movie business, he retired to what he calls “the most beautiful state of New Mexico, the smartest move I ever made.” Since making that move, he wrote the BAFTA Award Winning movie “Undertaking Betty”, starring Christopher Walken and Naomi Watts, and wrote a book on healing entitled “Reconnecting Your Life”. That book has now been published in 17 different languages.
Why is Fred running to be your HD22 Representative in the New Mexico House? He says he got tired of screaming at his TV and knew that he had no choice except to participate in our democracy, rather than stand by and watch. Although he's never run for public office before, he’s long been a political activist from his earliest teens, first by boycotting grapes in support of Cesar Chavez and Dolores Huerta and encouraging others to do the same. In the 70s he marched against the Viet Nam War and did agitprop theatre condemning the carnage. After the war he demonstrated on behalf of the Equal Rights Amendment and then moved on to gay rights, helping to start the very first gay rights parades in New York and Los Angeles. Most recently he supported the SAG/AFTRA strike. He’s a member of SAG and believes strongly in the union movement.
And now he’s tackling an even bigger challenge by running to be your State Representative from House District 22. The more you know about Fred, the more you know that he’s the right person for the job!
