It’s really all about CHOICE!!! Choice, Freedom, Equality and Rights!
We really shouldn’t even need to talk about this. Before Donald Trump hijacked the Supreme Court by appointing Neil Gorsuch to a seat that should have been filled by Barrack Obama's appointee, and then appointing Amy Comey-Barrett to the seat that should have been kept empty until filled by Joe Biden, Roe was viewed as an unassailable established precedent. Each of Trump’s three appointees agreed, during their confirmation hearings, that Roe should not be overturned. Agreed, that is, until they had enough votes on the Court to overturn it with the 2022 Dobbs v. Jackson decision, completely ignoring the 9th and 14th Amendments.
Because Fred is a man, one might think that a woman's access to safe and affordable healthcare wouldn't be an issue for him, but that is most certainly NOT the case. As a young man in the early 1970s, prior to Roe v. Wade, Fred was living in Milwaukee and had a female roommate who was in need of an abortion. He drove her to a designated parking lot in Chicago where he was told to wait in the car, right there, as the woman had a pillowcase forced over her head and led to another vehicle to be taken to a secret garage where the abortion was to be performed. When his roommate was brought back hours later, with the pillowcase still over her head, she was weak and quite ill. She was lucky. She survived the unsafe black-market procedure, but the experience shook Fred to the core, and he's been an advocate for women's rights, including the right to safe abortive procedures, ever since.
Fred believes that no woman decides to have an abortion whimsically. It’s a serious decision that almost any woman contemplating having one would struggle with. But, in the final analysis, physical autonomy . . . CHOICE . . . is as fundamental a right for women as it is for men, and Fred will fight in the legislature to keep other legislators and local governments from infringing on that right. Like the vast majority of Americans, Fred believes that abortions should be “Safe, Legal and Rare”. Efforts by the ideological far right to get rid of abortions won’t make them any less “rare”. It will only make them “unsafe” in localities where choice opponents are successful in making them “illegal”.
